Over the past weeks and months, we have watched the news
covering the war in Ukraine. Tonight I am deeply troubled in my soul! I find
myself confronted with the question, “How long will the world stand by and
watch the brutal murder of the non-combatant civilians of that nation?”
I can understand collateral damage during a time of war, but it appears that the Russian military forces are deliberately targeting non-combatant civilians. Why do they need to pursue a policy of indiscriminate bombing of civilian neighborhoods, orphanages, and hospitals? The human cost is unbelievable!
How long will the world sit idly by and watch from a distance. Just because this conflict is an ocean away doesn’t mean that it will not come to our doorsteps. President Putin seem to be taking a lesson right out of Adolf Hitler's playbook in his conquest of Europe in World War II. There are many similarities and history will teach us if we will be attentive. Winston Churchill paraphrased George Santayana in a 1948 speech in which he said, “Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.”
How long will the world watch? God have mercy on our souls if we fail the innocent ones who can’t protect themselves. I’m afraid their blood will cry out from their graves condemning humanity for watching and not doing all that we can to stop the murder of innocent civilians.
In Genesis 4:10, God said to Cain after he murdered his brother Abel, “And he said, what hast thou done? The voice of thy brother crieth unto me from the ground.” Cain shed innocent blood in the murder of his brother and God held him accountable. God will avenge innocent blood but what will be our fate if we stand by and just watch. God help us!
